Sorry if this is wrong area.
Setting up minecraft on gf's laptop and it has been having a problem with lag. Only runs 3-7fps. I shut down everything running in background, turned settings down and no change.
It is a Sony Vaio, i3 2350, 2 x 4Gb @ 1033Mhz. Integrated graphics intel HD3000.
Not sure what else I can try to speed it up.
It's just the computer. It's not really good enough to run minecraft. You can try installing Optifine, a minecraft mod.

But I've run minecraft on worse systems. Including an unlocked sempron 140 with 4Gb DDR2 @800Mhz with a 5450 1Gb. And even that was never this bad. Would sometimes drop to 10-15fps. But her laptop is running constantly at 3fps

Your statement is flawed. I can switch to my HD3000 graphics on my i5-2500k via Lucid Virtu and get around 50 FPS in Minecraft without Optifine for FPS++.
HD3000 and the i3 2350m is well enough to push Minecraft at decent frame rates of 30+. Something else is going on here that OP may overlooked or is missing.
@OP, ensure the Intel HD Graphics drivers are the latest version. That is first stop to do here.
Thats not true, I have been playing minecraft on computers that didn't even have the Intel i series of CPUs and only 1Gb of RAM. That computer did also have motherboard integrated graphics.
Yes Minecraf can run nice on low PC/Laptops some time. (My Little Test PC for Bukkit is an old Pentium 4 with only 1 1/2 GB and integrate Graphics, only run on low settings but run stable)
Lets try the normal things for u:
- Look that u have only 1 Java Version 32 or 64 Bit, depend on what Windows/Linux u run.
- Look if u have some energy Save Options on. (That will set down CPU and GPU if it on.)
If u have some on turn them off.
- DON“T try to update Graphicard driver or so. (ATI have big problems in the Beta driver with Minecraft)
And some Intel Chipset Driver have Problems to (OepnGL don't supported right in them.)
Hey, have been working on her comp, there was java updates available (she never does updates grrr) so updated it. Found her comp still also had 6.22 java as well as latest so uninstalled the old one to have just one java. She had it on power saver so put it on high performance mode. Updated intel drivers. Now getting about 10-15fps but usually sits at 10. still better than sitting at 3fps
