Hello, my name is Martin and I play on vanilla minecraft on a macbook retina (OSX Mavericks). The others day I downloaded one of the snapshots and played a while on one of my saves. After a while I went back to my original save because I was fed up with the bugs and to my surprise all my items were gone.\
All my items are gone on all my saves. Even my horse has lost it's armor and it's saddle. I can get items by mining or hitting blocks but still.. All my work is gone. Every chest is empty as well.
It's not a bug in the snapshot, it's a feature. The 1.8 snapshots have the new inventory / items implementation (no ids, only labels).
Once you use it you can't go back because 1.7 doesn't understand the 1.8 system.

Yes, as gerbil said. The snapshots right now are very volatile, with the changes in 1.8. This is why it explicitly warns to make backups, it doesn't just warn you for fun. No fix other than cheating the items back in from what you can remember.
