My 8 year old daughter plays Minecraft. She mostly plays creative mode. She loves it. It's a great creative outlet.
She's spent a month building a world full of her creations.
Another child at school told her how to create a Wither Skeleton Boss. But this kid did not tell her what it would do. (I didn't know either.)
She created the Wither, and it proceeded to start destroying all of what she has been building for a month. She tried chasing it and attacking it to no effect. She was crying her eyes out while doing this yelling NO NO NO.
I had her "Save and Quit" because I didn't know what else to do.
So, my question to this community is, is there any way that we can save all my daughter's work, or is it lost to this sadistic prank?
If we log back in, will it still be there?
Can we kill the Wither without destroying the entire world?
Is there a way to backup her world in it's current state to at least save what has not yet been destroyed?
Sorry to hear but it's to late now. You shouldn't have "Saved and Quit" because now it saved the world while being destroyed, so when she gets back on, everything will be destroyed that the wither was destroying.
CreeperCooperBloch, thanks, that worked. It depawned immediately.
Emerald99, we had to Save and Quit. She had shared the world over the LAN (to show me stuff), so there was no pausing it. Exiting was the only way I could figure to stop more damage.
The thing was just rampaging. It was attacking Villagers and Dogs (which my daughter has populated her world with). I was with her trying futilely to kill it but it was difficult to keep up with it.
Yes several buildings are half blown apart, but it's a lot better than just watching them ALL get destroyed.
And I've now figure out how to make backups.
I'll tell her the "good" news in the morning. She literally cried herself to sleep.
I can actually feel the pain of that, I probably wouldve cried too. future tip, if you do '/gamerule doFireTick false' (type '/' or 't' to get the chat box up) into the chat box it will make sure fire doesnt spread or destroy anything. Also (not sure if this is correct but test it with 1 piece of tnt) try '/gamerule doMobGriefing false'. That should make it so that any mob (creeper, wither, blaze) cant destroy any land at all. to turn explosion damage off try '/gamerule doExplosionDamage false'. Im actually not sure about that one but ill get a wiki page up and send it
commandBlockOutput - Whether command blocks should notify admins when they perform commands.
doFireTick - Whether fire should spread.
doMobLoot - Whether mobs should drop items.
doMobSpawning - Whether mobs should naturally spawn.
doTileDrops - Whether blocks should have drops.
keepInventory - Whether the player should keep items in their inventory if they die.
mobGriefing - Whether creepers, endermen, ghasts, and withers should be able to change blocks.
doDaylightCycle - Toggles the day-night cycle (the sun stops moving and stays where it is) (added in 1.6.1)
naturalRegeneration - Toggles natural health regeneration (Ibid)
So do '/gamerule [^the one you want] [true/false]' That should prevent and thing happening again
NOTE: I am not sure weather this resets every time you save and quit or not.
It does not reset -- type "/gamerule mobGriefing false" will prevent this from happening again. (The wither will still attack dogs/cats if they're nearby, but in won't break blocks.

Because of the way that minecraft always saves your latest progress with no older save files, manually making your own backups is always a good idea. I've made backups of my whole .minecraft folder in the past, backups of edited texture packs, backups of modded .jar files, everything really. And they're all over my PC in random places...
Sad to hear about how upset your daughter got at the damage the mob caused. Hopefully there's still enough of her builds left that she can use the remains as a guide to put it right, The suggestion above about disabling mob griefing is good, though of course you could always leave it on peaceful unless she wants the hostile mobs around.
Im really sorry about this. I think you have to back it up before it's lost. I suggest switching it to peaceful before the wither destroys everything.
ummmm dude, did you not read any of the posts
Also, don't feel alone in your pain. The same thing happened to my brother, except I was the one that built it (I also did not know what it would do) and it destroyed a village that he had added some REALLY COOL stuff to. I swear I almost cried and it wasn't even my creation. All my little brother did was attempt to beat me up, and honestly I didn't try to stop him because I completely deserved it.

It would've saved anyway if you X'd out.
Sorry, but the only way to kill the Wither is to change to peaceful. If it doesn't despawn, your daughter can just kill it because I know for a fact it won't explode everything then.
But, if you have Microsoft Windows 7, this is your last hope:
Press the bottom left Windows logo thingy.
Once the applications and stuff pops up, you'll see a text box on the bottom. Click it.
Type in "%appdata%" (without quotes, and with %.) A folder name called Roaming should appear. Click that.
Windows Explorer should pop up. Now, there should be a folder called .minecraft somewhere. Once you see that, open it.
Open the "saves" folder in the .minecraft
There should be a list of worlds all over the place. You can ask your daughter what the name of the world is.
Once she tells you, RIGHT click on the world that she told you. Press Properties.
A window should pop up with tabs on the top of the window. Press the "Previous Versions" tab.
Click any date that was before the incident, and then apply it.
Note that the Minecraft game cannot be opened while doing this. The world will be as normal once you play Minecraft again.
Also, for safety, in her world, type in /give YourName 137 1
This should give you a command block. Now, place the command block and type in EXACTLY: /gamerule mobGriefing false
And then power it with a lever, found in the Creative Inventory by pressing E or I (I don't know if you play Minecraft lol), and then Redstone, and there should be a lever. Place the lever next to the command block and activate it. This will allow nothing to be exploded, from mobs (Wither, Creepers, EnderDragon, etc.) except from TNT.

I'm really sorry about that too. Once my brother accidentally deleted lanny, a world that I had all of my amazing creations on. I was so sad. I get how your daughter feels.
Been a while since I've been here. Figure I at least owe an update.
Thanks for all the kind posts. No her whole world was not completely destroyed . We did not log back into it until we had an answer here (just switch to peaceful) and then she had if all repaired within a day.
