I have been playing minecraft on my laptop for over a year now. Game has always ran great, while using almost all settings to "max". No lag and great framerate even when using "better" texture packs(128x128 etc.. ) . It was great!
However ever since the 1.7 update, the game is extremely laggy. Unplayable, with default resource pack, most of the time. I've tried MCPatcher to try to help improve things. Helped a little but not much. I've gone back to other versions, like 1.6.4 for example, and it still exists. Tried lowering different settings, in minecraft, without success. Nothing has been changed on my laptop. It's extremely frustrating!
Any ideas of what could be causing this? Why it's happening?
Thanks,
Rob
Specs:
Windows 8 64-bit
AMD Radeon HD 7650M
Intel Core i7-3632QM 2.20GHz
Samsung 840 Series SSD ( 500GB )
8GB RAM
Last graphic driver update was from 8/21/2013. I don't think it's been THAT long since Minecraft last worked for me. Should I try reverting to previous drivers?
Thanks for trying to help me out, Dempa. Much appreciated!
Ok so I've pretty much narrowed the problem down to it being the new minecraft launcher. Now how to find a solution/fix.
What I've done since your last post...
Got all the latest updates and drivers from AMD's website. The problem is is that AMD does not support Panasonic, Toshiba, or Sony Vaio(mine) laptops. This is per AMD and they ask you to go to the manufacturer's website. In my case Sony.
I first reverted all the AMD stuff to default, the way it was when I purchased the computer. That did nothing.
I then got all the appropriate AMD updates and drivers from Sony. Installed successfully, however that did nothing either.
I then decided to try the modded Minecraft known as Tekkit. That, although not perfect, worked much better.
Still thinking the issue must be the new launcher, I then went to Minecraft.net and downloaded and older version of minecraft with the old launcher. Installed and Game played flawlessly! No lag. Was back to getting 75-95 fps again like I once could.

So after all this, it is my conclusion that it has something to do with the new minecraft launcher. Opinion? Any suggestions?
Ok, more info that makes me believe it's the new launcher.
With the MagicLauncher, no I do not get the big fps drops. Stays rather steady. What I did notice though is that MagicLauncher allocates more memory and uses more of that memory. The default Minecraft launcher will only allocate about 40% of available memory, BUT it will only USE about 25%-30% of that. Compared to MagicLauncher which allocates all of the available memory and uses about 50% of that.
MagicLauncher plays pretty good, I'd just like to use the default launcher if possible.
Try with increasing the ram allocated for minecraft in the normal launcher. Maybe that will increase the amount of ram that it is using.
Yea I tried that several weeks ago( 1G to 4G ) but it didn't help. It showed there was more memory, but it wasn't actually USING any of the added memory. I'll try it again when I get home.
