Hi everyone! Hope that somebody here has had the same problem and been able to fix it.
The issue is that after some time of playing 1.7.4 I get a terrible never-ending lag spike that keeps Minecraft almost frozen until you restart it. It's frozen for several seconds, then unfereezes for a very brief period (0.5 - 3 seconds), and then freezes again.
I notice that it happens when I travel long distances or between dimensions, i.e. in situations when a lot of chunks are to be loaded. I can be doing something around my base for like an hour and not encounter any problems, but as soon as I go elsewhere, it can happen in about 3 minutes.
I'm pretty sute this is not the buy-better-PC type of issue, because normally my FPS is around 100. I cannot post the specs right now (writing from work), but I will later if required.
Things I have already tried:
Reinstalling Minecraft.
Trying to run both on pure vanilla and with Optifine. Pretty much no difference, but OptiFine seems to delay the inevitable just a little bit.
Reinstalling Java.
Uninstalling 64-bit version of Java and leaving only 32-bit.
Installing an earlier version of Java (7u40 instead of 7u51).
Double-checking the path to Java in the profile.
Allocating more memory for Minecraft - again, pretty much no difference whether it runs with 512 MB, 1 GB or 2 GB of memory, it doesn't even use it all (at least according to the debug screen).
Your own experience with a similar problem or any suggestions at all will be much appreciated. I'm already starting to get desparate.
Please create a new world, does it occur there as well?
I have tried a couple of new worlds, and it keeps happening in them as well (both in survival and creative).
I have noticed one more thing. Despite Minecraft itself says that memory situation is totally OK, the according process in the Task Manager occupies way more memory than it's indicated on the debug screen. And it keeps growing until there is almost no free memory in the system, and that's where the freezing begins. I think Java just isn't freeing any memory it ever gets to use. Any advice?
Hmm. Try completely removing all java installations, rebooting your computer, then reinstalling java. Make sure that you get the newest version and correct bit.
Sounds like a corruption of your java, Java usually handles memory well.

I already did this, but I've done it again just to make sure. No effect, as expected.
I'm thinking of two options:
1) Give up to Java, add another 4GB of RAM and let it devour as much as it may want.
2) Reinstall the system, but it will be a huge fuuu if it has no effect.
OK, I've bought another plank for 4 GB, I'll try it in the evening and update on how it works out.
UPD. After I've added 4GB more RAM, Java suddenly started using less memory than before and now its memory usage doesn't raise over 1.5 GB which doesn't make any sense. Anyway, the problem seems to be no more.

Retired StaffThis actually didn't come to my mind. I'll try it once I get home.
