Alright, I'm in Vanilla. All I've added is Sphax Pure BD Craft Texture Pack. Survival Mode only, because creative lets you mine without effort.
Here's my story: I was chopping down a birch tree for wood for my house, but after the regular time of hitting it with my hand, it stays! I have time to mine it twice before it finally drops a birch block. Why does it do this? Can I fix it?

Your world may be corrupted. Create a new world to confirm this.
If your world got corrupted you can try to repair it with MCEdit. Open the offending world in MCEdit, press 'ctrl-i' and select 'Repair regions' in the dialogue which pops up. Once this has completed, save your world and exit MCEdit.
You may need to remove entities from a map, follow these steps. Warning: This will delete any and all entities in the selected region, including tamed animals! Open the map in MCEdit, select the affected region or use CTRL-A to select the whole world, then click on 'Delete Entities' in the menu on the left hand side.
To download MCEdit, go to http://www.mcedit.net/ and choose the version appropriate for your OS.
If the Problem only on one world and u want to hold them and don“t have luck with MC-Edit,
pleas upload u world to an filehoster and give us the link, we will fix it for u.
