Okay, I recently got minecraft beta 1.7.3 to work and I put beta 1.7.3 worlds in my save folder, ad they didn't show up in my world list. If anyone knows why please reply!:D
Anyway, there was a few world format changes since then, and (Assuming unzipping does not work) the best idea is to start with B1.7.3 (To make sure the world hasn't broken or anything) then slowly move up versions (Load the world in B1.8, then 1.0, then 1.1, 1.2 etc) and you'll notice sometimes it will "Convert" the world, and soon you'll get to the current version and the map should be A-OK!
(I understand this is impractical because you need to download around 20 versions of MC, but it's worth it in the end)
