i'm planning on getting a pc in the not too distant future but for now i have a mac and i was wondering, if i were to buy the mac version for now, could i then download the pc version later on without having to pay for it again?
also, if i get the mac version will i be able to play multiplayer with pc users?

As far as I know, the mac and PC versions are identical, and you can just get the launcher when you get your PC and put in your username & password and it will just download the game. I also believe servers don't care what platform you're on.
