Heres the problem that some people have been having, they would join any Multiplayer server or single player game,and when they tried to place a block it worked, but destroying them didn't. Game modes had nothing to do with it, you had no mods affecting the game.
To fix it, try following these steps:
1. Press escape.
2. Click on Settings
3. Click on controls
4. Finally, reset the controls, it should be good. Enjoy.
