Crafting area stays 2x2 after making crafting table

Greetings,

Just like the topic says my crafting area in my inventory stays 2x2 and doesn't go to 3x3. Thus I can't even get past the very beginning of doing anything. Needless to say it's not a good start for the game after I just purchased it...

You have to right click the crafting bench, not go into your inventory.
Then it'll be 3x3.
