I've been having the blocks refusing to vanish after breaking issue for months. It seems to come and go and is worse during peak hours. Often the game is unplayable. Last night a new problem showed up. The screeen starts flashing in colors. It looks like a driver crash. It happens in new and existing levels. I never used to have trouble with Minecraft but for months it's been a train wreck. It seems to be server issues but I can't figure out any way to play it off line. Basically the game is bricked at this point.
I said it was likely a problem on the server end since it was worst during peak hours, after people get home and first thing in the morning. I'm seeing major lag issues all over. Some times I see things like arrows and breaking eggs have major lag like 10 to 30 seconds before the graphics catch up and things like opening chests are nearly impossible. It seems like for the last few months the servers are badly overloaded.
This graphics problem is brand new and is not likely tied to my system since I made no changes during the time. It starts rapidly flashing colors making the game unplayable. It's been that way for the last 24 hours.
All these issues seem tied to the other end not my system so if there's a way to play off line it should resolve the problems. Personally I hate server based games because most run into these problems as the number of players exceed the available server space. The video issue may also be due to an "upgrade" on the server end that didn't include support for my video card. I'm on a three year old iMac.
I tried some one's suggestion for playing off line and it didn't work so I deleted Minecraft. A massive waste of time. Last server based game I'll ever play.

If you are playing single player that is never the server's (I assume you meant Mojang's servers) fault. Mojang's servers only serve for authentication. Please do not make such assumptions.

Graphics related issues are never the server's fault.

You're making assumptions. You're not making it clear if you were playing on single player or not. In single player, such lag "issues" are tied to the world being corrupt, or have erroring entities.

Now you're just making stuff up. Upgrades on servers do not affect the client's graphics at all. Again, all graphics related issues are local, they are never the server's fault. A server's role is only to host worlds for players to connect. If you meant Mojang's servers, they have no part in what you are trying to say, they serve only as authentication and login servers. After that you are not tied to those servers anymore.

What do you mean server-based? You could always play Minecraft on single player.
belseth, I'll explain to you how to play Minecraft offline on your Mac:
1. Start Minecraft. You will get the following screen:
Please note the network status in the edge of the Settings window to the right. To prove that I'm doing this offline, I have disabled all networking. If you have network access, that button that says "Play Offline" will say "Play" but the following steps are unchanged.
2. Click the button in the bottom center of the launcher that says "Play Offline"; the game will load and give you this screen:
3. Now click the button on the game main screen that says "Singleplayer". You will see this:
4. Select your saved game of choice or start a new game.
You are now playing Minecraft offline.
As to the rest of your problem:
Your graphics issues are not a server-side problem. The server tells your client something like "draw a creeper at 143, 75, 996" and the client dutifully draws one there. The server doesn't tell the client how to draw a creeper, just gives it the ID and the coordinates, and the client handles it from there. So whatever your problem with graphics is, it's on the client end, nowhere else.
