Ok, I am not really sure if this is a problem with my client or not, but I've tried everything I can think of and I can't find any other forum posts about this topic anywhere! I hope I'm posting this in the right place.
At first glance, I was sure my problem was server-side lag. It shows all the tell-tale signs: delay when opening chests/furnaces/etc, delay when breaking/placing blocks, delay when picking up items, delay when loading chunks, delay when firing arrows, delay when stepping on pressure plates or pushing buttons, the list goes on and on... I also want to mention quickly that this is not typical from my past experience. I've played on the same server for over 2 years and under normal conditions I do not get lag like this, so it is very recent. It happened first a week or two ago and lasted for a couple days I think... then it got better on its own until today. The symptoms make it pretty clear that it isn't client-side either (I usually see 50-100 FPS on the server, and in single player mode I have zero lag at all), but if it was server-side then everyone else would be getting the same kind of lag, no? Well I've asked the other players when I see them on and they are not getting the same lag I am, it seems localized to only me! Though, I did have another player tell me that I was moving erratically to them, in other words it looked like I was lagging to another player who was observing me, but they themselves were not experiencing the lag when they tried breaking blocks, etc. I'm VERY confused by this.
Brief description of the behavior of the lag: it is intermittent, meaning some of the time I'm playing like normal and I get no lag, but a couple times every minute or so I get a long spike lasting anywhere from 2-10 seconds (or longer) where the entire world freezes except for me. The frequency of the lag spikes also seems variable, sometimes it's fine for a couple minutes, and sometimes I get another spike every few seconds. Mobs stop moving, blocks stop breaking, redstone stops triggering, you get the idea... the trouble is that this makes the game virtually unplayable. Every few seconds of playing I have to stop and wait just as long if not longer for the game to catch up! Mining is frustrating, building is frustrating, fighting is impossible, and there's not much else to the game but that and exploration!
What I've tried is follows: I've tried reinstalling Java, it didn't help. I've tried resetting my computer and router and modem, but it didn't help. I've tried running the game with no other programs running in the background, but again no difference. I've tried searching the web for the past 4 hours, and I've come up empty-handed. I've tried running ping tests and speed tests to various locations in the US and as far as I can tell my connection is working fine.
Has anyone else suffered these symptoms too? What was the solution you found? My server is going to have a community dragon fight this Friday and I would like to take part lag-free, as in my current state I don't think fighting a dragon is going to be possible at all! Any insight into the potential cause would be amazing!
Do you get this weird phenomenon on other servers? If not, then it may be worth asking your server administrator to delete your player data (this will remove your inventory items, so keep them safe), and see if that resolve the issue.
