Hi All ... I'm a Minecraft simpleton ... my 10 year old is knowledgeable it seems.
However, we DO have an problem !!! And I desperate need to get her off of my Mac login!!
For some strange reason the Minecraft Launcher 1.3.9 now is FAILING to load Minecraft at login - on her partition/login of the Mac. It just comes up with "Sorry, but we couldn't connect to our servers. Please make sure that you are online and that Minecraft is not blocked. (SocketTimeOutException: Read timed out)
Now ... it loads perfectly well on my personal login ... but I have yo get her off it!!!!
Please help and advise what the problem may be.
THANKS! Desperate ...Oh yes ... the version of Minecraft is 1.7.4 ...
Do you have some kind of parental control, or web filter on your daughter's account? That might be what is blocking the MC downloads.
If you do have something like that you may be able to whitelist the things that MC can't access.
Minecraft has been working fine on my daughters account for many months ... then all of a sudden ... won't load (as above) ... the parental controls are unchanged ...
If it works on yours, but not hers, It's something on her end. SOMETHING must have changed, or it would have continued working. Could you do me a favor and post the entire log in the launcher?

BDCPhoebe, the launcher did change the way it was downloading updates recently as one more step that Mojang was taking towards the Mod API. The servers that host the downloads may have changed. Certainly the URLs of the downloaded files changed, because the forum has people posting whose pirate launchers can no longer download minecraft from the old URLs.
Thanks Gerbil and Gangsir ... Gerbil - if it is the case ... what should I do to 'backstop' as it were to get it loading again ?
Gangsir - I will send the log when home again ... but at the moment (I'm a photojournalist) I'm chasing a cyclone around Queensland Australia!! Should be home in a day or so ... THANKS for your offer of help!!
Cheers Guys ...
you might get past this if you disable the parental controls while launching MC and then re-enabling them after.
All the required files should get downloaded, the profile can stay logged in, etc.
The logs would provide an indication of which connections are being problematic, so what to whitelist.
And of course, if disabling the parental controls doesn't help, then the problem is something else....
