Can't seem to use 7-Zip with Minecraft.jar to put files into the Jar

When I try to add files to a jar file (even with Open archive > zip on the jar file) 7-zip will complain that the operation is not supported. Is there a way around this at all WITHOUT extracting the contents of the jar or changing it to zip?

I'm not going to accept "Use WinRAR" or "WinZip" or the like.

I just tried adding a random file within the .jar with 7zip, it works fine. You may need to reinstall the software.

I'm curious. Why not? They are perfectly good alternatives.
