I just downloaded Minecraft the other day to start playing again and I'm having these issues. I can still pick up dropped items, but they're invisible on the ground, so if some happen to scatter, I never find them. It's especially difficult when mining because I can never tell whether I actually picked up what I just mined or if it dropped to the ground. The only drops that are visible on the ground are planks and cobblestone.
Switch to a stable version of the game, does this still happen? If so, it may be a rendering issue. Rule out in-game settings by disabling mipmaps, anisotropic filtering, advanced openGL, etc.

Retired StaffIts a fast graphics setting issue.
If you switch to fancy graphics in video settings then your item drop are visible.
(I hope the fix this soon)
Today I tried my laptop and it does it, too.
I'll try changing to "fancy" graphics, but my laptop will lag.
