I had minecraft 1.5.2 and hadn't played again until recently. I tried to get the newest version by downloading the newest launcher. I pressed "run" and then a window pops up with the following:

I have tried uninstalling java as it suggests and re-installing but so far the same message window pops up when I try to run the launcher. I pretty much know nothing about java so I don't know where to start to fix the issue. Any help would be great!

Try installing a new bit of java, like 64 instead of 32 and vice versa.

Unfortunately this did not work
I downloaded the 64 bit java from 64 bit internet explorer and got the same message when I ran the launcher download

Do you have an anti virus? Disable it for the time being.

I have malwarebytes anti-malware and I can't figure out how to disable it other than uninstalling... I added java, minecraft and internet explorer to the ignore list though and tried again. Same message popped up.

Un-install for now, just for testing.

I've uninstalled, still no luck. I've turned off windows firewall as well but that didn't seem to help

Turn wifi on and off.

No luck again, I deleted minecraft completely and keep trying to re-download. Even the older version won't let me sign in. Says that I can't connect to minecraft.net

The only other thing I was using was McAfee but I completely uninstalled that.

This almost certainly means that the Java install that is being used (you may have more than one) is corrupted.

You should uninstall all versions of Java via the control panel, then manually clean out any remnants of java in your Program Files (x86) before reinstalling java.

I ended up running an antivirus that found a bunch of problems and once those were cleared out minecraft dowloaded properly
