I have a mouse with the side buttons. I changed the key bindings for 'Hotbar slot 1' (torches) and 'Hotbar slot 9' (pickaxe) to the side buttons for comfort and speed while mining.
Lets call my torches button 1 and pickaxe 2. All works fine while I'm mining normally but as soon as I crouch button 2 will equip my torches, but 1 will still be as per normal; they have not swapped.
It's really weird and I'm not sure what is causing it. None of my friends have used their mouse's side buttons so I do not know if it is me or not.

Assuming your button is shift, the problem might be that you're pressing symbols, not numbers. Assuming your button is NOT shift, it might be thinking f1, f2, f3,...,f12. Other then that i don't know.
