Obviously there's the main 'profile' that comes with the latest launcher, that goes under the .minecraft folder in the place we all know. When I found out that I could play earlier versions than 1.7 in a different place and not have to worry about accidentally ruining a 1.7 world by playing it in beta, I was very happy.
But recently, every time I try to play Minecraft 1.4.7 in a folder called Minecraft Maps, it uses my worlds from the original directory instead, but still it runs Minecraft 1.4.7. The weird thing is that it happens by chance. Sometimes it works and Minecraft 1.4 will use the worlds that I wanted to run in 1.4
For some reason, it shows all the worlds you have created. So I would recommend tagging them with their proper versions so that you don't load them with the wrong version. When you log in and the main client screen shows up, before you choose single player or multiplayer or whatever, check the bottom left corner of the screen. That should say what version your client is at. If its the right version, go ahead and make your world that you wanted to for that version. It shouldn't have any effect on your other worlds unless you log into them.

What? I'm posting this because Minecraft is using the wrong directory.
It is checked, and sometimes it does use the right folder. It just gravitates to using the default folder instead of Minecraft Maps very frequently.Well this is screwed. I just changed the directory to D:/Minecraft Maps and it STILL used my 1.7 worlds!
I can't get minecraft to use the wrong directory. I also tested if the specified directory isn't valid, i.e. "D:/Minecraft Maps" on my computer. The launcher just stops with an error about being unable to create the directory (as opposed to continuing with the default directory).
I'm starting to get it. Maybe they don't allow spaces in the folder name, which doesn't make a whole lot of sense because it has never been a problem before. I'm also on Vista, so this might be different on other people's end. I think I also tried a one word name for the Maps folder, but if that's the case it definitely didn't work.
Now I'm trying a method involving unchecking and rechecking the profile setting for 'use directory' and saving again. It just failed me.
I'm sorry if this is bringing you down, guys. I'm really having a problem here. Right now the best thing I can do is restart the profile until it goes to the right folder.

What the hell is going on?

I made a new profile that should direct to a folder called .minecraftCTM for the first time, it used the files from the original default folder.
