Minecraft Forums

So basically i finally have minecraft on my computer. i run it on mac and i'm trying to start a server with friends. i tried multiple ip's of mine and none of them worked so i went digging. i found some videos talking about the download on the minecraft site for multiplayer and how for mac you have to download that and paste some other code into a folder together then open them in terminal. i try to open it in terminal and for some reason it says i don't have permission for that and won't give me the option to edit that so i do. that's more of a computer thing though i assume so i won't ask for help with that. my question is my friend got a server going and i tried joining but every time i got io.netty.channel.ConnectTimeoutException. i don't know what to do or what it means. i'm very computer inept so stuff like this is rocket science. any help is appreciated
