So I decided to frankenstein an old computer together to try to give my kid something to play Minecraft on with me. Thankfully the computer was relatively free (Only had to fork over money for a CD Rom and a longer network cable). I thought the game would at least run it a little bit, but when I start the game, I get 2FPS ... including at the title screen.
The computer is a Pentium 4, 2.6GHz with 2 MB ram and a GeForce FX 5200 video card running Windows XP. I made sure to install the latest version of Java. According to the system requirements page, I meet the minimum. Why would I only get 2FPS at the title screen?
EDIT: I just looked up the specs of the video card, it only supports OpenGL 1.5, where minimum requires 2.1. Could that be causing the issue?
2 Megs of RAM? Jeez, I think you might want to have at least 2 GIGS allocated to MC. That's what I had to do to get a good FPS, anyway. The OS probably isn't any problem, though you might want to get that upgraded to Windows 7 or something since XP's dying soon. And the OpenGL thing probably is a huge problem, since MC involves a lot of OpenGL. I doubt that processor would be any problem, that speed's actually really good, especially for an old PC. So it's probably that GPU giving you trouble.

Creepers are my worst enemy in Minecraft? No, that's Skeletons.
Yeah -- I wasn't going to fork over for more RAM until I was sure that the system was worth spending money on. The version of Win7 I have isn't 32 bit, so I can't install it and the copy of Windows XP I installed is now yelling at me for genuine validation reasons (Never had that problem before, damn it).
It looks like this is probably a lost cause. I'd need a new video card, more RAM, Win 7 --- for that investment I could just go buy a cheap walmart computer and call it done.
Task here was to frankenstein something usable together with what I had available, minimal funds since I can't afford spending that much money right now. Oh well --- tried and failed. Thanks for the help!

We can try to make it run better, but I wouldn't get my hopes up if it really is an old machine.
