I've read up on posts of the similar issue and none of the solutions they've been given have worked for me. I am running Avast antivirus, which i've read to not effect minecraft. My internet connection appears to work.
I've tried the solutions and I actually still cant get it to work. I am having the same error message. I will try uninstalling my protection temporarily to see if that works.
So i've gotten rid of my antivirus and that hasn't done anything. I've made all the adjustments you guys have been so kind to recommend, but unfortunately I still cannot play minecraft.
You need to change Minecraft to not start in compatibility mode.
1. Right click on "Minecraft.exe"
2. Click on "Properties"
3. Click on the Compatibility tab. (see screenshot below)
NOTE: If the Compatiblity options are grayed out, then it is a 64 bit program and cannot be changed.
4. Uncheck it or change it to use your version of Windows.
5. Save/Apply and close.
6. Restart Minecraft
7. Come back here and tell us the results.
If you did that, I'm sorry.
But try add/allow Minecraft in Windows firewall.
I have changed it to the proper version of windows and I've tried turning off compatibility mode for it. No change still not working.
And as the development console said.
"Unable to download remote file. Check your internet connection/proxy settings."
Here is a pastebin of minecraft not in compatibility mode http://pastebin.com/4kB95L9g
This is a common issues, where Minecraft don't have the computers access to the internet.

I feel like a total noob for asking, but how does one go about checking internet/proxy settings?
