I do have the Inside Village Info mod added just to see the numbers, range of village, etc. Not sure if that makes it a modded client or not. I have ruled out this as changing anything though as I see villagers breeding even when I load up an unaltered jar and there are already far more villagers than doors will allow for.
So I recently formed a village and switched to creative mode and dropped in two villagers to get everything going. Currently there are 38 doors which meet the criteria for being counted as houses within the village. This should give me roughly 13 to 14 villagers and 1 golem but this is not the case, at all.
I will see these numbers fluctuate from as low as 12 up to 23 and then jump right back down to 15. They aren't sitting stable at all. When I do a physical count of the villagers I come up with right around 28 to 30 but only around 16 are reported by the game, on average. The number of houses and village radius changes constantly unless I lock a villager in a house on the outskirts of the town. One minute I have 36 registered houses with a radius of 45 and then 10 minutes later it says I have 29 registered houses with a village radius of 39. There are NO zombies getting inside, the entire perimiter is fenced in completely and I have triple checked to ensure no villagers are escaping nor have a chance to fall out of the village.
I have also noticed the villagers love to clump up around a couple buildings and when they do that's when the village radius seems to drop and doors become unregistered as houses. I've tried searching everywhere but I can't figure out why the population nor village radius remain stable and why the game keeps letting them breed when there are clearly too many villagers already in the village.
I've also seen the number of registered golems change as well. It will report 0 golems but there could be one standing right in front of me. None of the golems in the village were man-made, all were naturally spawned.
Could these issued be related to the initial villagers being creative spawned in and would shipping in a couple villagers from a natural village to kickstart things perhaps solve the issues?
Do multi-story buildings or those located within a different biome cause any issues or even village layout such as some houses being up on a hill result in similar issues?
Have fences in the village blocking off a small area been known to cause problems as well?
Edit: I just released my last trapped villager and the village radius dropped from 42 down to 32 and number of houses from 35 to 19.
Update: Discovered the issue was due to the fact the village rests on a hill terrain and since doors are counted within the spherical radius of the village center but villagers are only counted if they are 4 blocks above/below the village center any villagers not inside this cube wouldn't be counted towards population and allowed to continue breeding.
