I've looked around quite a bit and can't seem to find anything specifically pertaining to my connection issue.
I simply downloaded the minecraft.exe and ran it, I can run the game fine single player, but when I try to connect to my friend's server (I'm on the white list, and many others are playing fine), I get this message:
"Failed to connect to the server. Internal Exception: java.io.IOException: An established connection was aborted by the software in your host machine"
I assume this means *my* computer's software? I'm running Windows 7 (64-bit), have disabled AVG, white-listed Minecraft and Java in Comodo firewall, and installed 64-bit then 32-bit java (in that order, as suggested by another post, though neither shows up in Firefox add-ons; security set to medium). Pretty sure that's everything. (Windows Firewall and Defender are inactive, and even after allowing, still does not work)
People connecting to a 1.6 server with a 1.7 client get a VERY similar message. If you're sure you're using the right version, make sure the server isn't using mods or anything. (Bukkit plugins are fine)

Any clues?

Windows firewall and defender are not active, and even after adding it, no dice.
