Minecraft sounds acting very strange when using my headphones...

When i use my headphones, minecraft sounds either dont play, or about half of the sound plays. This is extremely annoying, and i want to know whats going on. Please help.

do sounds play without your headphones?
ie speakers plugged into audio output, assuming your headphones are using a different output socket or usb

ive figured out something: 1.7.4 sounds work fine. 1.6.4 sounds do not. Also, i use a laptop.

have you tried removing the 1.6.4 versions folder and letting it redownload all the files and sounds?
