I recently downloaded Minecraft on my new Windows 8 laptop and was automatically installed on to 1.7.4.
I can log onto Singleplayer without error but when I click 'Multiplayer' it freezes up and says 'Not Responding' at the top. Sometimes after about 10 minutes it will go onto the Multiplayer screen, but most of the time it just crashes.
The latest version of Java is installed on the computer.

3. Reinstall java (from the Sun website only). If you have a 64-bit operating system, you should install 32 bit java first and then 64 bit java. Read that linked page for details.
4. Close *all* other programs - including any anti-virus, firewall, ad-blocker. Spotify, email notification, Apple iTunes, adobe updater... *everything*. Just temporarily. If you're using Windows firewall - turn it off.
5. Make sure you have the latest graphics driver *from the official website*. (Links: AMD, Nvidia, Intel)
Thanks for the awesome post! I did all this and launched MC and it didn't work. However I restarted and played around with my Profile settings, changing it from 1.7.4 to 1.7.2. I'm not sure if this worked or if my computer just doesn't like 1.7.2.

It will almost certainly be your graphics card that doesn't like 1.7.4.
Are you using an "integrated graphics card" which is built in to the motherboard, rather than a separate card? A "mobility radeon", or an "intel graphics accelerator"?
Being able to run 1.7.2 but not 1.7.4 is a common problem with some cards - usually those ones. The reason is, they kinda lie about their OpenGL capabilities - so Minecraft asks them to do things they are not capable of doing.
The only true solution is to upgrade your graphics card. In the case of laptops, usually that isn't possible, and it's time to think about replacing the computer.
So I'm sorry I can't give you happier news, but I'm glad you are at least able to play. If you do have an old graphics card or integrated card - think about upgrading.

I just got my computer in November. It's brand new. Also an Entertainment Laptop. I'd imagine it would have a good graphics card. Maybe I'm wrong.
