Basically Minecraft was acting as if I had no internet conection, it appear to try and download updates 10 times then gives up and gives me the option to play offline which works fine (steve skin however). After hours of trying to work out what was going on, I removed one of two versions of Java and everything worked fine. It seems that when I install the 64-bit version of Java* the problem returns.
*I'd like to use the 64-bit version so that I can allocate more ram.
I'm pretty sure I've done everything on that list, some multiple times. The only one thing I haven't done is uninstall AVG free edition, but I did disable it.
That can't be the issue. Everything works fine with 32bit java. Only 64bit is when I'm having the issue. If it was an ISP issue I would have the same issue whichever bit version of Java I'm using. Please re-read my original post.

Is there any way of getting round this?

I have, I found little on the subject of my original problem, (should have come here first) and not much more on my current problem.
