I've read in many places and seen many YouTube videos where hitting F3+H will display the item durability in numbers in the tooltips. However, I can't seem to get this to work. Hitting F3 and H together doesn't do anything.
Running Windows 8 (on a desktop - no Fn key issue), I've made sure running latest version of Java. I've tried running different versions of Minecraft from 1.5.2 through 1.7.4.
Does anyone have any suggesions of things to try? Is there a file I can open and edit to force this on?
Is the tool new?If its not new it will just say (tool name)

What's better? Building sand castles of understanding and compromise that will fall to the slightest wind of change? Or will you build your beliefs with steel and remain immovable against the elements?
Make sure that you try it a few times, i find it is a little buggy at times and its not mojangs priority to fix it, just work with it, try it every 5 mins or so...
This thread appears very early in the results of a Google search, so I'm posting here with the solution that worked for me when I found I could not get (Fn+)F3+H to work. I'm using Windows 7 and am currently using the latest official release, 1.8.
What worked for me was pressing F3 and H at the same time out of the inventory menu.
Pressing F3+H didn't do anything when inside the inventory menu, for me. So, I closed the inventory, pressed F3+H at the same time and then opened the inventory menu. It then showed the durability of each used item.
It's more of a mode change, not a single-use function like I thought it was.
Hope that helps someone.
