After updating my game to 1.7, I've noticed a gigantic decrease in mob spawning, including passive mobs. During the night time, in areas with very low light levels, they spawn very rarely and during the day, passive mobs don't spawn often either. In previous versions of the game, mobs spawned with no problems, so it would appear as though the update must have messed something up. I know for a fact that I am NOT on peaceful difficulty, and that I have doMobspawing set to true, so I have no clue as to what is wrong with my client. Also, I am using an unmodified version of the game, so there aren't any mods which would affect their spawn rates. Does anybody have any suggestions as to how I can solve this problem?
I have tried reinstalling the game, changing to peaceful, then back to normal and changing doMobspawning to false and then true; none of this has worked. Even when I explore new terrain and dark caves, I get few or no mob spawns.
It's probably fine; mob spawning is complicated. There might be lots of dark caves underneath you.
As a test, go to a brand-new area that is flat - a desert or plains; wall yourself in, and wait overnight. Preferably with 1 glass so you can watch. I would expect maybe 20 mobs within the immediate area around you.
Passive mobs spawn extremely rarely - they're reasonably common in newly generated chunks (when you are exploring), but it's really rare for them to spawn on already-generated terrain - see wiki page.
Thanks for the info, I'll keep this in mind. Although I don't remember having an issue before 1.7; enemy mobs would spawn all over the place at night, in chunks that I've already loaded and generated (such as the ones in front of my base).
