I'm on a Gateway laptop, model ML6714 w following specs: Processor Intel® Core™ 2 Duo processor T2080
1.73 GHz | 1 MB L2 cache | 533 MHz FSB Chipset Intel® 943GML Display panel 15.4-inch WXGA (1280 × 800) Memory 2048 MB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM (2 × 1024)
Operates at 533 MHz Total slots: 2 DDR2 slots | Available slots: 0 DDR2 slots
Maximum memory: 2 GB Video controller Intel® Graphics Media Accelerator 950
Up to 224 MB of Dynamic Video Memory
I've removed a lot of programs and freed up a lot of the hard drive; I now have over 80GB free. I've also used this DeFraggler program to defrag the hard drive a few times.
I've also set most of the game specs to their lowest level and am still getting pretty laggy performance from 1.7.4.
I did review this thread - I did not install the software this thread suggested; I'd rather not unless people think it will really help (not even sure if they're free or not??).
Any thing else I could try to improve performance and make the game playable?
I relented and loaded Advanced System Care 7 and ran some of their features. I've seen an ever-so slight performance boost but the lag I have is still noticeable.
When I hit F3, the FPS never gets above 8. Shouldn't it be higher?
I'm not really suprised it's so low, on such an old machine. It's... what... 5 years old? More? And the Intel Graphics 950 is from about 2006. So I humbly suggest that, to play modern games, it's time to upgrade.
A_herb, you need to stop telling people to get better machines. Maybe he cannot afford one?
I have a much faster home computer. This notebook is for the road and is pretty old. I always thought MC was a low-intensity application and that a computer like this could handle it easily. I guess I'm wrong.

As for Hrstruggle, try installing the Optifine mod from http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/249637-164-optifine-hd-c7-fps-boost-hd-textures-aa-af-and-much-more/
