Ok I know there are MANY posts about 'cant connect to server' but I think mine is a little 'different'
The problem is that for some unknown reason, I am unable to connect to a couple of servers BUT am able to connect to many others
Now before you say - But the server may be down.. I know it isn't because I've chatted to other players on Skype who are actually playing on the server at the time I'm chatting to them
- THEY can get on but I am unable to...
I've tried many suggestions found by Googling (reinstall mc / Switch off firewall / antivirus etc etc / use clean Client etc etc), & despite being able to connect to many servers... these 2 servers I am unable to (& dont say - go elsewhere.. I'm a moderator on one of them so HAVE to show my face)
I know for a fact that one is a 1.6.4 with modified server files to allow those with 1.7 to join, but the other is 'pure' 1.7 server files.
I've read that it 'could be because it's has plugins & not vanilla minecraft server' - but if that is so..
.. why can I connect to servers like 'hypixel','flymc' etc.. these are surely NOT vanilla
When clicking on the [Multiplayer] button .. these just come up with 'Can't connect to server' message after a while. Does anyone have any idea why these 2 servers don't 'connect' while I can to other servers
BTW, I WAS able to connect to them a few days ago.. but since then.... nothing & AFAIK NOTHING been updated on my PC (antivirus etc)
I use Avast antivirus (free), default Windows XP firewall & use a Virginmedia 'Superhub' (which had NO port forwarding rules etc added when I was able to connect)
Sounds like your internet connection isn't great. I have the same thing.
If single-player works, then minecraft is fine fine.
If you can (maybe sometimes) connect to some SMPs and other times you can't - it's a bad connection.
Speak to your ISP.
thanks for the reply.. but I don't think its the ISP that's the problem.
The reason ?
For the past 2 days I have managed to join all the other servers in my list WITHOUT problems at various time of the day (My 'normal' list has ~6 OTHER servers than the 2 I've been trying)
- it's just these 2 servers that EVERY time I try, regardless of time of day, always come up with 'Can't connect to server'
It's as though those 2 ip's are 'blocked' somehow (I cant even 'ping' them through CMD prompt - get 'connection timed out') despite me never setting up any port forwarding, rules or stuff like that (I'm not 100% sure HOW to do that anyway).
If the ISP was at fault - surely I would have 'some' trouble with the other servers.... wouldn't I ???
Not necessarily. Different servers, in different locations, using different ISPs.
Well I've been delving into this & I THINK I may have the answer, but have no idea why or how to get around it
I did a 'tracert' from the command prompt to the problem servers [jcvsmc.com & mc-daily.com] & they both fault out at the same IP address in the trace
120 ms 134ms 120ms 69.30.209.222
* * * Request timed out
Other servers I tried didn't have this IP in the path so I'm guessing this IP is the problem..
afaik these are NOT produced by the same people, so I'm curious to know why they seem to go to the same IP in the trace (i've contacted the 'owners' to see if they can confirm this)
I've checked my 'HOST' file and that's empty.. tried resetting my DNS (even changed from 'auto' to google DND and OpenDNS server) but no luck.
Currently checking for viruses & malware to see if there's any type of Ip highjacking (none found so far)
According to Minecraft launcher - the mc-daily ip address is different to the one you show - but similar to jcvsmc
173.208.228.187 compared to 173.208.228.186
There IS a webpage called mc-daily.com.. & that could be why the the ip is different.
I've contacted the owner of the mc-daily.. asking if his game server is hosted on the same as jc's the owner
As for 'Wholesale Internet' being my ISP.. nope.. I'm in the UK & use Virginmedia.. so its not that
Here's the trace log & as you can see. it goes pass my ISP & then stops at 69.30.209.222

On skype had a chat with a couple of players.. one has suggested that maybe "The data center might have set up a new routing system" (whatever THAT means)
It also seems like the 'owner' of the server may be hosting BOTH mc-daily and jcvsmc worlds - despite one world owner lives in UK & the other lives in the Netherlands
I've contacted the Server owner to see if he knows why I am unable to connect through that '69' ip address
I'm also UK, and right now I'm connected to 173.208.228.187 Have you tried directly connecting to that IP address yet? I guessed they were related, because when joining that one - which is "jcvsmc.com" - it says "We;come to the Minecraft Daily Server". You should be able to direct-connect to that IP though. At least that'll confirm it works, kinda thing - and that the problem is something to do with DNS.
In case you don't know what I mean.... I mean, in multiplayer, choose "Direct connect" and put 173.208.228.187 Should work.
No luck with Direct connection either.. yeah I know.. kinda weird
Several of the players have already suggested that....
BTW I FINALLY got a reply from the actual owner of the server(s) .. he gave me a few IP addresses to trace & report back....
After which he said that it IS weird & he'll report it to the IT department.
I cant remember the full details (& what I do remember is kind've vague) but he did say that IT had 'updated a server', installed 'a new switch unit' (or something like that), they've had a few reports of 'similar events' & that they are investigating it.
He had also said that he had trouble with one of his servers there not being able to communicate with his others & that somehow my pc is showing the same symptoms despite not being part of his network.
Of course this is all gobbledygook to me.. I know virtually nothing about setting up server networks etc so dont know how complicated it is to make one or how all the PC communicate etc
You cannot direct-connect to 173.208.228.187? How about, for example. 198.15.122.163 which is "minetime.com" - can you direct connect to that IP address?
Hmm this is weird..When I first started a [direct connection] with 198.15.122.163 I got
Could not connect to default server, please try again later: io.netty.channel.ConnectTimeoutException
However I [add server] and it showed up but took ages for me to get on
..I then tried [direct connection] again & it worked
I retried the 173.208.228.187 but that didn't work ... again but this time I see a new message in Minecraft developer (or perhaps it was there before & I never noticed it)
[17:05:20 INFO]: Client> [17:05:20] [Client thread/INFO]: Connecting to jcvsmc.com, 25565
[17:05:40 INFO]: Client> [17:05:40] [Server Connector #3/ERROR]: Couldn't connect to server
Oh & I tried something else out... I used 'minechat' on my Android phone (using wifi - My PC is cable connected) & even THAT can't connect to jcvsmc.. so I'm pretty sure it can't be something on my PC (firewall, wrong setting etc) thats causing it...
I'm tempted to do a factory reset of the Router (FYI it's VirginMedia 'superhub'.. dont know what make/model it is) JUST in case there is something on it thats blocking me.. although I cant see anything in the control panel port blocking/filtering/firewall)
