Being as nobody responded to my first post in the "unmodified client support" section of the forum 2 weeks ago, I decided to try posting it here now.
I downloaded the latest launcher and coped ALL the files to my USB. I then coped EVERYTHING into the application data folder "G:\Documents and Settings\my user name\Application data\.minecraft" and tried launching the new launcher. I got an error message even before it loaded that said:
"Downloading: https://s3.amazonaws...ncher.pack.lzma (try 10/10)
Exception: java.net.UnknownHostException: s3.amazonaws.com
Unable to download remote file. Check your internet connection/proxy settings."
Is there a way to avoid this? This specific computer isn't currently connected to a network. The old launcher works fine but the new one try's downloading the same file every time I load it up. What is the meaning of this file, should I be suspicious of it, how big is it, where is it saved and what is this file being used for?
Actually no.
When I ran the Windows XP install back in around 2006, it set the default (Master) drive as G:\. This is why it is G:\Windows not C:\. C:\ is my slave drive. I noticed this as soon as the setup was done, I just didn't feel like re-running a 4-hour Windows install again. The application data folder does not even exist in C:\ anyway, so if I made the directory myself it would not run.
(By the way, it's Application Data in Windows XP, not this appdata you speak of.)

appdata is application data, where minecraft is installed.
Go to profile editor and make sure the game directory is correct.

Again, I will say that the old launcher worked fine on this computer so stop worrying about the local drive and directory! I have not yet encountered a game that doesn't work because of the directory structure.
Your probably not using Windows XP either. appdata is something from Windows 7.

At least 86% of what I say is always correct.
fm87!Actually no.

Type %appdata% into the explorer address bar, it will take you to the same place in XP as it will in vista+.
