When in SMP I can't see when other people are talking, or use the chat feature. I can type into the chat box, but when I press enter to submit it or the commands, nothing happens. I can't open chests, I can really only break/place blocks but nothing else. I do have the multiplayer chat settings to 'shown' and all my controls are correct.
I've already deleted my .minecraft and redownloaded, and the problem still persists. If anyone could help that'd be great.

Everything works fine in single player, as I said it's only in SMP, it's on 1.7.4, and it happens on any SMP server. It has worked previously, yes. It's my friend that is having the problem, I'm helping him out so i'm not sure of the computer specs but we both just recently started to play again and it just started happening for him. We haven't tried other versions, I'll get him to do that now.

And we tried other versions, it's the same for every version.

Can you open other blocks with inventories such as furnaces, dispensers, droppers and Minecarts with Chests?

Nope, nothing with an inventory or any of those items will work, we tried a bunch of them.
But in the game when he 'opens' a chest, I can see the chest animation opening but nothing comes up on his screen.
