So I posted a thread awhile back about how I can't get LAN at my friends' place. It's still a problem. Some review leads me to believe it's probably network related:
- On the same laptops, we can run LAN on my home network.
- It's only at this place that I experience such problems.
- All manner of computer settings are all green as far as any google searches I've done go. This includes a variety of solutions from the common to the obscure (going into network settings, going into network properties...)
I can only conclude that it's something wrong with the network. Port forwarding, dropping firewalls, turning on network sharing... nothing works. We're on laptops that run Windows 8 and we can run on my home network as I said, so I'm curious to know what it is I'd have to do.
All we want to do is run a LAN server, where we open it up to LAN from home. No online stuff, shouldn't need any port forwarding, nothing complex-- so I'm seriously stumped on what to do next to make it all work, finally.
Any input at all is welcome! If there's anything I can clear up just ask, I have no problems doing so.
I suspect that when your friend came to your house, they joined your WiFi as a Home Network, but when you went to their house you did not. So on their network your computer has more security enabled.
At their house, on your computer, go into the Network and Sharing Center. If your active network is not displaying as 'home network' then click that link (might say Public network or Work network), and change it to the home network type.
Reviving my topic. Please, somebody, anything. We've tried virtually everything, what's the thing we're missing? What could the router be doing that's blocking access?

We've tried direct connecting too, to no avail.
