This has been a problem for some users for an extremely long time. It's basically where java won't even start. Uninstalling and reinstalling java does not help, nor do any of the usual trouble shooting options.
I have found a fix for this by doing a little toying around with the launcher compatibility settings. Please NOTE that this fix ONLY works for Windows 7! I do not know if it works for other versions of windows.
1. Right click on the minecraft launcher
2. Click properties
3. Go to the combatibility tab
4. Click run this program in compatibility mode
5. Open the drop down menu and change it to Windows Vista (DO NOT pick service pack 1 or 2. Just NORMAL vista.
This fix allowed me to play minecraft again so I hope it works for others. If it does work for others, perhaps sticky this thread?
Unfortunately a side effect of this is that you cannot play online. I do not know why this happens. This issue has been solved. Please follow the above steps and you should be able to play servers too
