My younger brother's computer is too old to run anything newer than 1.7.2, and I have tried everything from wiping and reinstalling, to updating the driver. The problem is, every time I redownload the client, it auto-updates to 1.7.4. How do I brick the updating process and lock his Minecraft at perma-1.7.2 until he gets a newer rig?
The "Use Version" list box in the profile editor has at least 20 versions to choose from if you are using the official launcher. It has even more if you have enabled Beta / Alpha/ or Experimental versions.

Now, that we do switch back to 1.7.2, will this effect later versions of the updates?
A profile that is locked to a particular version will stay at that version.
The launcher can still be updated, and may need to be updated, for example last week when mojang reorganized how the content files are stored and delivered.
