I have been playing minecraft since Dec 2012. Firstly on a win PC and now(since June 2013) on a Linux PC. The launcher and the client have updated them selves to 1.37 & 1.74 with no problems and I am able to play minecraft local and on an alreadt enter multiplayer server.
The multiplayer server has announced that ti is hutting down and I attempted to enter other servers in the list of servers but any text I type appears in the terminal window where I enter the minecraft command to run a shell scrip to start minecraft.
This was not a problem in the past as obviously I was able to enter the address for the current multiplayer server.
The development console output is below and the current mp server runs at 1.6.4 and was entered into the server list about game version 1.5 with the really old launcher.
Note, I've tried this a profile locked at 1.6.4 and a new profile at 1.7.2 & 1.7.4(beart2) and 1.5.2 just to check. The only difference is whether "hide network address" button is there.

Basic window management here, but the Minecraft game (Not terminal) window is selected and in front, correct? And why are you using a shell script to launch MC? Can't you just double-click on the JAR?
#! /bin/sh
cd ~/.minecraft
java -jar Minecraft.jar &
This is /usr/local/bin/minecraft
it was working, i.e., I was able to enter the current server I'm playing on, but no longer.
The text jut turns up in the terminal where I wnter minecraft.
woops, forgot the other bits.
Yes, the minecraft game is full screen in front or other screen to terminal I have a dual screen system actually one screen over two monitors.
Terminal -> Login/Play -> Mojang -> Game is the sequence of "windows" until game is full screen.Aarh, work around found. It seems I can edit the server list if I do it in windowed mode rather than fullscreen.
Also, just remembered that the development screen output actually comes out in the calling terminal.
Sadly, you're way off the track there sunshine.
You can create the new profile in your console(?) screen.
It doesn't require cracking or anything.
So I can have a profile for V1.7.2 and anther for V1.6.4 and so on.and not have to edit the profile each time.
Hint, you authorise before you choose the profile you are going to play.

Curse PremiumDon't use cracked. It will ruin your day.
(Evidence: https://minecraft.net/haspaid.jsp?user=beart2 is false. Paid for accounts show as true.)
