I'm trying to play a LAN game with my friend, but whenever either of us selects "Open to LAN", in game, the world doesn't even appear in the others multiplayer menu.
Furthermore, when we try to do "Direct Connect" it gives the error
Failed to connect to the server
java.net.SocketException: Network is unreachable: no further information
We both have version 1.7.4 and tried on older versions that worked previously to no avail. Please help!

I have the same problem. There's only one WiFi network on my house, and every time I try to play on a LAN world with my brother (we both play in 1.7.4) the world doesn't appear on the other computer's server list. We tried with many versions, but every time the world doesn't appear.
If I find the solution, I'll post it to you, zeroo00.
This one happened to me, and this is how I fixed it. (You need an admin account, or temp access to one)
Open Control Panel (Assuming Win7 here, all other windows OS's are the same just with different names) and stick "fire" in the search bar near the top. Just under "Windows Firewall" there should be something like "Allow A Program Through Windows Firewall" Click that. If the whole thing's kinda greyed out, click "Change Settings" near the top. (This is where you need the admin account) then scroll down and toggle "Java SE Platform Binary" (Or the like). If there's two, do both. If they're ticked, untick them, and if they're unticked, tick them. Hit Apply/OK (Don't just close the window!) and go and do this on the other computer. Then you can play LAN games!\
Use "Direct connect", and connect to the internal IP address of the other machine.
You can find that by running a command prompt on the machine that will be the server, and typing "ipconfig/all". You're looking for the IPv4 address - it will probably be 192.168.something.something
zeroo00 - are you sure you have put in the correct address?
tried it, yes i'm sure i had the correct adress, still didn't work but thanks.
Had this problem with 1.7.4 I just let java through the firewall and it worked. If you're on windows, go to control panel, then click on the security thing. Click allow program then click the button near the top left to add programs. Tick Java. If there is more than one, tick them all
I'm having the exact same problem... the game shows up on the list as a lan game, but i get the same error
oddly enough, if I switch hosts (normally the pc is host and notebook guest), the notebook lan game doesn't ever show on the pc multiplayer list.
I've tried switching on and off everything of java on the firewall as indicated, but didn't work.
Switching the firewall off works though... but not a good solution right?
I have a mac and all the videos i have looked up are for pc. Can anyone tell me how to fix LAN worlds on mac? I tried the direct connect thing. And yes, we are on the same wifi

Same thing, but on PC.
Oh boy, this is going to be alot of Firewall option things and port forwarding. Those are probably the top two reasons. While I can't help out with those two reasons, all I can say is, go to the command prompt, type in ipconfig, your ipv4 address should pop up.
DO NOT POST IT HERE, NEVER!
Ask your friend to type that in the 'direct connect' bar.
Also, when opening to lan, in the Minecraft chat, if an ENTIRE thing of numbers (like x.x.x., x standing for numbers), ask your friend to type that in maybe. For me, all I get is a few numbers, which wouldn't certainly help.

Why would it matter if they posted it or not? It is a local ip. Nobody can connect to it unless they are on the same network. My local IP is 192.168.1.82. It is also that for millions of other people. `ipconfig` on Windows prints no private information (unless you consider the DNS private info, but most people use Google's DNS server, which had the ips of both 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4).
People shouldn't care about posting it here, cause it reveals no personal info, and there's nothing you can do with the information, except help them understand what IP to type in the server field.

usage: ipconfig <command> <args>
where <command> is one of waitall, getifaddr, ifcount, getoption, getpacket, getv6packet, set, setverbose
What if you can't find Java SE platform binary?

Just sayin'.
Since Mac runs OSX (now called macOS) which is a *nix-based operating system, the command would be "ifconfig".
Mac uses Terminal, now cmd.
