I have no idea why, but suddenly the 1.3.6 launcher is hanging. The console opens, checks for updates (and if I download the .minecraft folder re-downloads them), and displays the launcher window. But the Update notes is blank, the profile dropdown says "Loading profiles...", and the message in the bottom right is "Welcome, guest! Please log in. Loading versions..." with the login (or as it's labelled here "Log Out") disabled. The launcher is hung, to the point where it doesn't even redraw if you resize the window, and for a minute or two it even locks the computer to the point where the mouse skips and jerks around.
I can't find any launcher logs, I can't access the console to get any messages there, and I can't do anything more with the launcher how it is. And this was working just fine a few days ago.
I believe I have solved the issue. One of the things I'd recently done is install a few (60 thousand or so) fonts onto my windows system. It seems that the web browser component to the launcher wants to scan each and every single one before it starts, which was causing things to hang mightily. Uninstalling a few thousand fonts later, it's not hanging nearly so long, and if I have the patience for it, it actually starts up. So I'm thinking that's the issue. Glad to see it resolved, and it's a very odd issue to have.
