Well, nothing has changed on my comp.
I started a new hardcore map today to try out 1.7.4
And my game has been stuttering every couple seconds.
My older map (somewhere between 1.6 and 1.7.2) was just fine last night, and I havent done anything major (or even minor) to my computer since.
I get decent FPS; around 90-120 in grasslands and 40-70 in jungles.
Things I've tried (in order):
Disabled VSync
Increased Framerate to unlimited
Uninstalling both 32 bit and 64 bit Java
Ran CCleaner
Reinstalling 64 bit Java
Checked BIOS Version (up to date)
Updated Chipset drivers (possibly already up to date)
Checked graphics drivers (up to date)
Allocating 2GB of RAM to Minecraft
Allocating 2GB of RAM to Java
Uninstalled and reinstalled Minecraft

Mate I am having the same problems; high end PC as working a treat with 1.7.2 but not now ;-( Might go back to 1.7.2 when I can find it ;-) Let me know if you fix it and I likewise ;-) xx_6581_xx
It happens no matter what biome.
As strange as it is, it seems to only happen during hardcore mode.
I created a new survival mode and everything was fine on that world.
To be honest, Im wondering if that single hardcore world was just corrupted.
Im going to make a new hardcore world and see what happens.
That's interesting. Only on hardcore you say? strange.
Anyway, make sure minecraft is using your dedicated vid card.

From what I can tell, that singular world might have been corrupted during creation or something.
My new hardcore world isn't having any abnormal amounts of stutters, but Im not sure that I find 1.7.4 to be quite as smooth as 1.7.2 anyways.. at least when it comes to loading chunks.
Seems like chunk loading was smoother in the previous couple versions.
Well I may be a little behind here, but I am also having this issue. I normally get anywhere around 300 fps constant (That is in grasslands I get 150-200 in jungles) and with the new update i'm down to 150 fps and the game is constantly stuttering accompanied by massive lag spikes. I have changed nothing on my computer or game (except the update of course). I would say that the update just has a new bug, but has anyone else gathered any new information about this?
Try checking your render setting back to either 8 or 10 and see if you get better performance more akin to what you played with before the 1.7 updates.
What I like to do is use max render distance when I'm scouting for things like villages, but otherwise I switch the render distance back down when I'm out fighting mobs or mining/building and want better responsiveness.
