Just got the 1.7.4 update, and while some things are "fixed" I have a whole new problem forcing me to revert to 1.7.2 for the time being.
On 1.7.4, when I try to break a block, it takes about 5 seconds for the block to actually break and drop, it is identical to server lag in multi. Also, things in the furnace only processes 1 tick every 5 or so seconds (meaning the white arrow only moves 1 pixel every 5 seconds). My fps is~60 the whole time, and I experience no lag moving around. Chunks also render much faster than they did in 1.7.2. I've tried creating brand new 1.7.4 worlds and have the same issue.
I'm here to let you know that you're not alone. I'm having the exact same problem. 1.7.2 ran beautifully. After the latest update I have hit major fps drop spikes, lag in blocks and when using red stone/block updates, and when my fps (ingame) says I am running high I still see visual frame drops. Any advice would surely be appriciated.
Cheers
I have the same problem with lag where I break a block and it doesn't show as being broken until 2 or 3 seconds pass. I also experienced some sort of lag glitch where the game is ok for 4 or 5 seconds and then freezes/skips for half a second, then repeats.
I don't have the problem mentioned above regarding the furnace.
The problems I'm experiencing seem (just my impression) to happen most likely if I'm in or close to a jungle biome. If I steer clear of jungle biomes the game usually seems to play ok, although there seems to be a slight lag/delay every now and then. Is a pity since I like the jungle biome. I'm not playing on a server, just playing solo.
Have experienced these difficulties since the first 1.7 update.
It is possible that they've introduced a bug at the max render distance. Edge effects. Wasn't there a bug related to mobs spawning and walking into unloaded chunks and then the game kind of 'lost track' of them? So you'd be at the max # of entities, but they'd all be unloaded so you wouldn't see any mobs.
If you turn the render distance down to 8, (the max that 1.7.2 would have given you), does 1.7.4 work better?
In 1.7.2 I can change my render distance to 16, and it runs perfectly. So...that bit about 8 being the max in 1.7.2 is incorrect, unless you meant something else?
I guess you didn't actually look at the bug I linked to.
1.7.2 never rendered more than 8 chunks no matter what you had it set to.
So if you had set 1.7.2 render distance to 16, it would never have actually rendered at that level until the update to 1.7.4, which might explain why some people saw a performance decrease. Comparing 1.7.2 performance to 1.7.4 performance isn't apples to apples if you have a render distance more than 8.
Ah alright, I didn't understand that link, as I thought the render distance in 1.7.2 did increase past 8 (it seemed to, but it must be a mental thing).

Playing on windows 7 64 bit, 12 gig ram, gtx 460.
I the have the same problem. I am not sure about it only happening near jungles though.
Just reporting on an update from my earlier post above. When I switch the render distance back down to 8, as mentioned by in gerbil's posts above, the problem fixes itself.
I can switch up to the max render distance to 'scout' when I'm trying find villages. But at higher than 8 render distance it does get choppy, more so in terrains with more trees (hence the jungle problems). Once I've found a village I switch the render distance back down to 8 and it plays fine.

Any ideas? Any files or specs I should post?
Thanks, sharf.
I have noticed along with other players on my server, increased loading delays and block lag with the 1.7.4 patch. Also clickable links are broken in 1.7. Both of these issues were not observed before the 1.7-1.7.4 patches.
So... Mojang... Any new snapshots coming out to fix these "bugs?" If enough people are noticing these issues, perhaps they will address it quicker
I'm having the same problem, I can run any other Minecraft version with completely maxed out settings and get at least 80 FPS, but I can't get more than 50 (Even with VSync and FPS Limiter off/set to unlimited) in 1.7.4. Amplified or not, no settings make the FPS any better.
Edit
I turned of Anti-Aliasing in AMD Catalyst Control Center and I'm getting 300+ FPS. I guess Minecrafts built in AA conflicts with it.
I have very bad lag and my computer is good 12 gigs of ray 2 ghz processer and hd graphics even optifine is not saving me this time my walking is slow and jerkey + 1.7.4 makes my cpu cores go to 100% eachJEB is ruining minecraft it was better when it was just notch he kept it plain and simple.
