Demo Hangs "Not Responding"

Hi Guys - Want to run the demo before paying for the game but the demo constantly hangs on my PC with a black screen where sky, etc. should be and the Windows task manager keeps toggling between running & not running. I have the latest Java and all Windows updates installed, running a P4 with 1GB RAM under Windows Media Center 2002 (XP) SP3 - amy help would be greatly appreciated!

Hello, its been months and no reply! Surely I'm not the only person to experience this issue with Minecraft not responding. Can someone please try to shed some light on this issue.
