Minecraft help sent me here b/c she was unable to correct my problem. I've had no problems with this computer and have been logging in to Minecraft with the new launcher ever since the ne launcher was issued. Now in the last mnth or so I seem to be having issues with authentication and can no longer connect with
The window that opens when Launcher tries to log me in contains some text that suggests I cannot connect to the MC servers because I have invalid characters in my Authentication Key.
I don't know where authentication kys are stored or generated. I've tried to find such a thing but no luck.
It's a bit weird. I have two copies of M/C so I can play remotely with my grandson. The launcher will connect if I try to connect me with an older version that I sign on with my character name. It has it trouble when I am trying to connect the newer version that requires my email addy.
Another weirdness is that I have no trouble logging on with my desktop IMac with the launcher with either account.
My SYSTEM
MacBook 2,1 (2007) 2GB Both WiFi and Ethernet connections give the problem, OS X 10.6.8. Latest j/s version. MC Launcher 1.3.6
DETAILS OF WHAT I SEE
Details of what happens when I try to login the problem account.
Start MC launcher
Window opens showing j/s
Launcher window opens but then is replaced with a smaller window requesting email address or username plus password. Of course in the working account I/m logged in directly; no smaller window opens.
I enter the info and a second window opens askingfor the same info but also telling me that 1) Cannot connect to the server and 2_That there is an authentication problem because I have invalid characters in my authentication key.
Any deas for what should do?
Sorry if there's TMI,,, I'm not sure which may or may not be important1

with the new launcher have you migrated your account? you said you still log in with you username. thats an old way of logging in, i suggest you go to the mojang site and migrate your account to the new style. nothing changes except how you log in . instead of typing <ingamename> <pass> you will actually log in with <emailaddress> u signed up with and <pass> . logging in with the new launcher iver heard HAS to be migrated it doesnt support legacy login mode.
more info can be found here https://account.mojang.com/migrate
is there any way you would be able to provide screenshots of the steps you said you see? that would be awesome
If you can log in anywhere with your game name, then you should always be logging in with your game name.
Once you've migrated your account, you'll always need to log in with your email address.
In other words when it asks for your email address or user name, it's not really giving you a choice. You have to log in with the one that is appropriate for your account and only one of them should be appropriate.
I would guess that the problem is more closely related to connecting to the Mojang server than getting thru the login/password system.
You both made suggestions that indicate that I wasn't clear about my exact situation:
1. I have 2 seprate Minecraft accounts, The older one from 2011 that I login with my inGame name and a newer one from last June 2013 that I log into with my email address. I have not needed (yet) to migrate the older as it continues to work fine.
2. The newer account that is native to the Minecraft launcher is the one that is unable to connect to the Mojang server.
3. Both accounts logon just fine with my other computer. They go directly to the Minecraft home screen and do not require me to enter an ID and PW unles of course I'm logging out and changing accounts.
I'll post screen shot in a separate post. It'll make it clearer what I am seeing.
John
Here are 3 screen shots.
The launcher, instead of going to the launcher window where I have the option to play or tp log out, briefly flashes the Launcher window which I show a Shot-1.
Shot-1
This is on screen for about 2 seconds then in the center of the window another login window appears. Shot-2.
Shot-2
If I enter my Email address and PW, this window is replaced by the window shown in Shoy-3. If I enter my inGame name and password for the older account, it logs on to the window where I get the option to play... and everything seems to work correctly.
It is in Shot-3 that I get a message that I am unable to connect with the server due to authentication prblems. I am hoping that someone can tell me what to do next to find and remove the invalid characters.
Shot-3
Be glad to answer additional questions.

Darn! There were 3 jpeg in that post. I'd likeyou to see them, Can someone pls point me to instructions on how to include images here.
Thanks Extreme Heat
Yes I can connect to Mojang with that URL. Actually been there a number of times trying to change my PW, back when this problem appeared. The problem seems to be the launcher not connecting me like it's supposed to. I'll post the Screen shot as soo as I read the link you just provided.
The Software Update scam showed that all is up to date and current.
Here's the image that indicates problems with authentcatio.
And ys I do have another computer on this local net. It is not having the problems this MacBook is having. Both accounts at Minecraft work as advertised with the Launcher.
John
For a little while I was concerned that you might have some hacked launcher that might be designed to collect accounts, but I've just reproduced your problem.
You have a trailing space on your email address, and this causes the error.
Thank you gerbil!! And thanks to Extreme Heat and QTPriest who helped out.
What a stupid error. I am able to log in when I type my email, but I normally use a TypeIt4Me shortcut to type it for me. When I do that I get the connection error.
After a little looking I found that the TypeIt4Me software seems to add a space after the email address string. Never noticed that before. I'm a bit surprised too that the Mojang system doesn't trim the space off. Never had a problem with it before
But Thanks again. Now on to more important things

Hi,
From that error, I don't see where the login credentials would play a role with the issue, it sounds like bad encryption..
Are you able to login at https://account.mojang.com/me ?

Hi,
Then that means that there is bad encryption going on.
You need to install all available Software Updates available for your Mac.
To do so, click the Apple icon in the top left of the screen, and click Software Update. Continue to install all updates until there are none.
If this does not work, then do you have another computer on your network?
Here's the image that indicates problems with authentcatio.
