To all! I would like someone to explain to me, why my download of minecraft from a gift card to my laptop has me at 1.5.2. Perhaps this is where everyone starts out, and then are updated as updates come. If someone could let me know this, it would be appreciated.

I think you have your user profile set at using that version and not Use Latest Version.
If you don't know what that means after looking at your launcher then you need to download the new launcher off of Minecraft.net.
