I use night vision potions a lot to see in the dark, but lately they've haven't been much of a help.
What will happen is that I will use the potion and if I go into a certain area, I would have the effects of a potion of blindness (able to see the sun only in its yellow color and that's it, however, the tag in the inventory still says Night Vision in it), and the areas can change as I use the potion. Here's a picture of me underwater using the potion with the blindness effect:
As you can see, you can see the sun only and some of the particles from the potion.
And right here is the status in the inventory:
I am using a recourcepack that is from 1.6 and this thing has been going on since 1.7.
