OK. Let me start off by saying I bought this game a few days ago simply for the multiplayer. It's a great experience being able to play with friends, and super frustrating when something as simple as opening a LAN server doesn't work.
I've literally tried everything: Hamachi, turning off my firewall, updating java, direct connect. Nothing freakin' works! I can't do something as play a game of Minecraft with my brother who is sitting right next to me!
Mojang, I understand you guys are all great people, who work incredibly hard to provide gamers with a quality experience. But please, do something about your multiplayer engine. It is WAY too complicated, and when something as simple as setting up a two-player SMP on your home network is made completely impossible by a rewriting of the multiplayer engine, then frankly, I sort of feel like this was a huge waste of my time and money.
If someone has a solution to a person in my predicament, any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hamachi seems to make it worse:

edit: just got nostalgic about my old sc broodwars days - half a night spend getting a lan to work and then too drunk to play a game properly ^^
