Hi.
I recently purchased Minecraft and installed it. I am using the 1.6.4 version of it.
Me and a friend(He is from Denmark) started a server. I joined the server and all went well for those few seconds, but then when i spawned the FPS dropped and I typed a message.
The message took 10-20 seconds to show up at first. After that massice lag everything dropped down and my Lag and FPS stabilized a bit. It now takes messages 1-2 seconds to show up, which is normal i guess.
1.The server lag gets so bad at times when I run around the map, and type a message it takes 6-15 seconds to see it on the chat.
2.When I hit a mob it takes about 2-4 seconds to get hurt and turn red.
3.If i try to ping his server or computer, the ping I get back is about 168. This is normal for me since I live all the way in South Africa. 168 Ping should also not cause this sort of lag in game.
4.I installed Optifine and configured some of its settings to up my FPS, my FPS now is around 10-18, Which is quite irritating at times. I really also dont know what to do about my FPS.
Below are some specs of my current computer:
CPU = Intel Pentium dual core(not duo) 1.6GHz
RAM = 4GB(More than enough)
GPU = Stock integrated GPU with 256MB video memory(Minecraft needs atleast 128MBs)
My computer is not the best, but it should be able to run Minecraft on low, shouldn't it?
Well that's where the FPS and server lag comes in.
I have a 1Mbps internet connection, so i find it hard to believe that the server would actually lag THAT much.
I just want you guys to help me with my server lag for now, the fps can wait. Any recommendations will be accepted, thanks a lot!

Ok, find out what specs the server is running on.
I'm sure your friend won't mind sharing.
This means Ram, CPU, and Player Count. (If it's not just you two.)
This will allow us to see if it's the server that's the problem, or your computer.
Also, the 1mbps net connection worries me.
It might be fine, but it may also be the main problem.

I'll send my Server-CV. Lol.
Yes, it is the connection. You need a lot more than 1 Mbps connection. That's frankly terrible, and i wonder how long it took you to load this page. I have a 20 Mbps connection, and I get very little server lag. Or, from your friend's side could be the problem, if the server is running off his computer. Not much you can do, other than making your internet better. As for the FPS, that's just your computer not being good enough.
Edit: Yes, 168 ping is very normal, for anywhere, but may be different if you're using minecraft ping or cmd ping. The ping isn't too important.
Feel free to pm me about any concerns, corrections,or questions.

1 Mbps should be fine to play servers, so it might be your friend's internet connection (assuming he is hosting it on his computer). The low fps is your hardware. The best you can do is get the latest version of Optifine and turn every setting down. You will get very low fps in an area with lots of entities, so check f3 to make sure that isn't the issue.

Survival Islands Challenge: Four islands and a vast ocean... can YOU survive?
Ok, thanks a lot guys. I appreciate it.
I have 1 more question though...
Are there any texture or resource packs that I can download that are 8x8 or lower that don't look too bad? This could drastically increase my FPS.
I have tried some Texture and Resource packs but they didn't work so well. What do you guys recommend?

I have a little surprise for you back in the server.
