So I was playing and I was really into it and all of the sudden it just freezes. I'm playing on 1.7.2 and it is still frozen up on my screen. I have not tried to exit it because I want to know if there is a way I can still save the world because I really don't want to lose my progress!

u have to kill the program and hope that u progress was save fare e nave.
If u unlucky u have to repair u world after a new start. (If u world get corrupted there is MC-Edit to repair it)
If u build much always make an copy of u world after (or before) u play Minecraft.
