I'm trying to get a command block in single player mode with the command

/give <player name> 137

Here are my settings...

Single player mode
Creative mode
Cheats ON
Difficulty = Peaceful

When I run the command, I can see a command block quickly flash in my hand, but it always disappears. I'm able to run /give with other items and get them on my inventory bar sucessfully. Its only the command block I seem to have a problem.

I've known this to happen with "pick block/middle mouse button"ing but from what you say I don't see any problem The only thing I can think of is you have some command somewhere rapidly clearing you inventory of 137 (i.e. the command "clear @p 137" on fast tick pulse). This is quite the glitch and although I do realize I have provided no answers to the question. I can give you some trouble shooting though: make a new world with all the same settings you listed and try it then if it works, you have a problem with your specific world file, if it doesn't, you know it is more of a outer problem. Secondly I recommend trying the same thing on a different computer with the same world just to narrow down your problems.

Sorry I can't fix this but hopefully this provides some problem insight.

Okay I'm officially a big fat noob.

I was really getting the command block all the time but just didn't know it. It was going to my inventory instead of the item bar at the bottom. I failed to notice the little chest icon in the creative mode inventory GUI. Just not used to it yet.

Thank you for the great troubleshooting tips though. It helped.
