When I try to join a server, that has updated to 1.7 so that's not the problem, I get an "authentication servers are currently down, please try again later", and I have been trying to connect for over a week, and they are still down.
You may have a problem with your hosts file, which overrides DNS queries. Please follow the following directions:
Press Win+R. In the window that appears, enter '%SystemRoot%\System32\drivers\etc', and press Enter. In the window that appears you will see a file, 'hosts'. Open that file in Notepad, and copy and paste the contents in spoiler tags in a reply.

I assume this won't help, as it's a "sample host file" according to it, but here you go.
# Copyright (c) 1993-2009 Microsoft Corp.
#
# This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
#
# This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
# entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
# be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
# The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
# space.
#
# Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
# lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.
#
# For example:
#
# 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server
# 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host
# localhost name resolution is handled within DNS itself.
# 127.0.0.1 localhost
# ::1 localhost
this is beginning to present quite a problem, all the servers I play on are beginning to update to 1.7.
and since I can't connect to servers in 1.7.....
but seriously, any help would be very much appreciated.
Trend Micro HijackThis is an utility that is used to collect diagnostic reports of your computer to help narrow down an issue you may be having. Download: http://sourceforge.net/projects/hjt/
Run the program, choose 'I accept', then 'Do a scan and save a log file'. After a while a text file will open. Copy everything, and paste it in spoiler tags for us to see.
does anyone know what could be causing this?

Curse PremiumDoes the authentication servers part show up as green?
If it does, and you still fail to log in, then it could be a problem with your internet.
I have no problem connecting to servers in 1.6.4, just 1.7.
