I just downloaded the .exe for the latest version of Minecraft (1.7.2). I first attempted to run it, it prompted me to download Java, which I did. I have the latest version. (Version 7 Update 45).
Now when I attempt to run Minecraft the Minecraft Launcher returns this:

I'm running Windows 7, I just build this computer, yes I attempted uninstalling / reinstalling Java, and yes I attempted re-downloaded the .exe for Minecraft.
i am having the same problem! yes i have tried uninstalling/re-installing java but when i go to my .minecraft folder there are only two things in there:
Change the name of your folder. Mine was SERVERSTARTERMOTHERNUCKER! and I changed it to something without ! or symbols its now Minecraft Server. At least it worked for me

It is common misconception that all we need to see is the error, it is not, every part of the log is important.
